The mighty mountains of Scotland but what is a Munro summit?

This mountain classification is definitely one of the biggest ones in the UK covering the huge mountains that sit north of the border in Scotland.

These are some of the highest mountains in the UK and include the highest point Ben Nevis with other notable Munros including Ben Lomond, Ben Macdui, Cairn Gorm and Ben Lawers.

Where did the name Munro come from?

Sir Hugh Munro created the first list of the mountains known as Munro’s, when they were documented in the Munros Tables that were published in the Scottish Mountaineering Club Journal in 1891. That does make it one of the older mountain classification in the UK if not the oldest from the ones I have researched.

Definition of a Munro?

The main definition of a Munro is that the summit sits higher than 3000 feet above sea level. There is no requirement when it comes to prominence. I mean it isn’t really needed when the mountains are that tall.

How many Munro summits are there?

The original list included 538 summits that stood over 3000 feet. Now the SMC has update that list to be 508. This is made up of 282 summits that are counted as separate mountains. The other 226 are referred to as Munro Tops.

How many have I ticked off

So far I have only bagged 3 of the Munros. Ben Nevis (Beinn Nibheis), Cairn Gorm (An Càrn Gorm) and Ben Lomond (Beinn Laomainn). I do have plans to tick plenty more off the list on my next trip to Scotland though.
