Mountain Classifications – What is a Tindale Summit?

After researching all the different mountain classification across the British Isles one thing came to mind. There is not many of these lists that include all of the nations that make up this amazing set of islands that I call home.

So that is why I have set about creating my own bagging list of Tindale summits. Yep I’ve chosen my own name. This might change as the years go by and I set about reaching the tops of each of these mountains.

I have a love for bagging Nuttalls but these don’t include Scotland or Ireland and it is safe to say after bagging a few of them that many feel a little more like hills that mountains due to the lower prominence required to meet the standard. So this is my attempt at both whittling down and extending that list.

What does a summit need to be a Tindale?

To be classed as a Tindale summit a mountain must be at least be at least 2000 feet above sea level. The same as a Nuttall. This list goes one further though and demands that it must also have a prominence of 2000 feet.

How many Tindale summits are there?

So this is where I am hoping that I’ve got all my number right. In total there are 103 summits that meet the classifications set out above. A large proportion of these are in Scotland with 71 of them being north of that border. Then with the inclusion of both Ireland and Northern Ireland add 22 summits to the list. Wales is the home to six of the mountains and the remaining four are in England.

How many of the Tindale summits have I bagged and documented so far?

My adventures have covered many of the great areas of mountains across the British Isles. So far they have lead me to tick 11 of these mountains off the my list.

So yes I’ve still got a lot to do, and I’ve got a new island to travel to tick 22 of them from the list.

Are you thinking of bagging the Tindale’s Summit list?

I hope that you’ve enjoyed hearing about my new mountains classification, soon I’ll publish the full list and you can work towards bagging them all too. Although I really do want to be the first to complete the list I would be ecstatic if others wanted to join in on that bagging journey.
